Music &
choir
Music is an important part
of the worship and fellowship at Immanuel Church. The primary role of the
choir is to support
and enhance the congregation in singing at services. As such the choir
becomes
an important leader in worship, not only in music, but in prayer and
praise
through song, working with the Vicar.
For
a number of years there was a fairly large and enthusiastic choir
confident in
singing many and varied choral pieces under the guidance of an organist
and
choirmaster. Time moved on, the then organist and choirmaster left and
for a
period of 18 months there was no regular organist. However, with the
help of
visiting organists and the support and loyalty of the choir, services
continued.
In
2005
David Lane
agreed to become our Musical Director. Under his leadership, music at
Immanuel
has evolved into what it is today. We have a small yet talented robed
choir,
and our repertoire has grown to include more modern pieces of music,
including
some written by David Lane’s
late father.
We
work in a slightly more relaxed way these days, which has been
necessary due to
the addition of several babies to our younger female members.
It
is fair to say that although small in number, we are an enthusiastic
and happy
crowd. We are of course always looking for new choristers.
We
now also have an excellent music group which plays at All Age Worship
services
on the second Sunday of each month.
Choir members practice on
Monday evenings from 7.30pm - 8:30pm,
in church.

David
has been Musical Director at Immanuel Church
since August 2005. He has been a
professional musician for nearly 40 years working in all kinds of
music, from
classical & church music to rock, pop and jazz.
He was classically trained on the piano from
the age of 7, and studied pipe organ, from the age of 15, at Tunbridge School,
in Kent.
He mainly works in the Theatre world these days, having been Musical
Director/Keyboard player for shows in London’s
West End,
on many national tours, and for 21 Pantomimes.
He is currently playing with the popular,
sell-out
concert tour ‘Beyond the Barricade’.
“Although
Immanuel’s musical policy is quite traditional, we
sing a wide variety of more modern hymns and have a very capable
nucleus of
musicians and singers, and, we are always on the lookout for new people
to join
our small, but perfectly formed, choir”
